Searchlight Cyber, a company specializing in Continuous Threat Exposure Management, has strengthened its dark web investigation platform, Cerberus, with the introduction of a new Marketplace Search and Insights module. This enhancement provides investigators with an automated system to gather data on dark web marketplaces, allowing for improved filtering based on investigative priorities. By offering greater visibility into the dark web ecosystem, this module enables law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity professionals to identify high-risk threats more effectively, ultimately aiding in the fight against cybercrime. Currently, the module contains data on 140 marketplaces, with plans to expand as new markets emerge.
One of the most significant hurdles for investigators combating dark web crime is the lack of visibility into illicit marketplaces. Unlike traditional websites indexed by search engines, dark web marketplaces operate in concealed environments, making them difficult to locate. Even when identified, understanding the full scope of criminal activity within these platforms is a complex challenge. Searchlight Cyber’s new module, developed in collaboration with law enforcement, seeks to address these issues by providing a comprehensive dashboard that offers an overview of each marketplace, including the number of listings and active vendors. Investigators can apply filters to refine searches based on the type of illicit goods being sold, recent marketplace activity, and geographic shipping destinations.
The data collected by the module highlights key trends in dark web commerce. Among the 140 marketplaces currently indexed, 76 percent sell drugs, 49 percent deal in stolen credit card information, and 11 percent facilitate the sale of weapons. In terms of geographical reach, 51 percent of these marketplaces ship to the United Kingdom, 49 percent to the United States, and 45 percent to France. Notably, the marketplace “0day” has been the most active in 2024, based on the number of participating vendors.
Dave Osler, Head of Product at Searchlight Cyber, emphasized the importance of this feature in empowering law enforcement agencies. He noted that a lack of comprehensive oversight of dark web marketplaces has historically hindered investigations, making it challenging for authorities to pinpoint the most serious threats, allocate resources effectively, and secure funding for further operations. By providing an overarching view of criminal activity across multiple marketplaces, Cerberus’ new module helps law enforcement stay ahead of cybercriminals who exploit the dark web for anonymity.
A senior law enforcement official praised the module’s efficiency, particularly in identifying marketplace administrators and key personnel. “Identifying the admin and staff behind these marketplaces is the first step in all investigations, so having this done by Cerberus is a huge time-saver. The overview page also helps us determine whether to take a marketplace seriously or not in a blink of an eye. From there, we are able to focus our resources on tackling priority targets.”
By enhancing investigative capabilities with real-time dark web marketplace insights, Searchlight Cyber’s latest innovation strengthens law enforcement’s ability to dismantle criminal networks operating in hidden online spaces.
