A recent survey of companies with over 500 employees across various industries highlights a concerning trend: 6 out of 10 organizations experienced cyberattacks targeting their data storage in the past year, yet fewer than half take adequate steps to defend against emerging threats and ensure rapid recovery. Conducted by Nexsan®, a leader in enterprise-class storage solutions, the survey underscores the growing sophistication of cybercriminals who exploit vulnerabilities in backup and storage systems, compromising both primary and secondary data.
The findings reveal a disconnect between awareness and action. While over 90% of respondents perform regular backups, including offline copies to mitigate ransomware risks, only 40% use immutable backups—considered essential for safeguarding data against tampering, deletion, or encryption. Worryingly, nearly one-third of organizations fail to regularly test their data recovery capabilities, leaving them vulnerable to prolonged downtime. Although 77% believe recovery should occur within 24 hours of a breach, just 32.5% are confident they can achieve this.
Charles Burger, Director of Cybersecurity Solutions at Nexsan, emphasized the need for stronger defenses and regular testing. “This survey revealed that even organizations familiar with cyberattacks often fall short in ensuring full protection. Vendors must play a key role in educating businesses about advanced threats and effective defenses.”
Nexsan’s Unity™ NV6000, featuring built-in immutable snapshots and enhanced backup capabilities, is designed to meet these challenges. When paired with Nexsan’s Assureon® active data vault, organizations gain robust, unbreakable backup solutions, ensuring continuity and resilience in today’s complex digital landscape.
