Cloudflare’s 2024 Impact Report: Building a Resilient and Open Internet

December 20, 2024 By admin Leave a Comment

Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET), a leading connectivity cloud company, has unveiled its fourth annual Impact Report, reflecting the company’s mission to build a better Internet and to support global causes that promote innovation, security, and accessibility. This year’s report underscores the transformative role Cloudflare played in securing critical infrastructure, safeguarding democratic processes, supporting content creators, and enhancing Internet transparency. As the digital landscape becomes increasingly complex, Cloudflare continues to position itself as a cornerstone of an open, secure, and innovative Internet.

A central theme of the 2024 report is Cloudflare’s work in protecting democratic integrity amid global unrest and conflict. With half of the world’s population eligible to vote this year, Cloudflare’s initiatives secured over 90 political campaigns and 60 local media sites in preparation for the U.S. elections. Through its partnership with Defending Digital Campaigns, the company provided free cybersecurity services to election websites and political entities, successfully mitigating increased DDoS attacks that could have otherwise disrupted democratic processes. Beyond the U.S., Cloudflare Radar monitored online activity in over 70 countries, offering real-time insights on Internet traffic, cyberattacks, and shutdowns to support civil society’s understanding of digital election dynamics.

The report also highlights Cloudflare’s innovative strides in empowering content creators. In response to the growing influence of AI and the challenges it poses for content ownership, Cloudflare introduced tools that give website owners the power to block, audit, and control how AI bots access their content. This initiative fosters a transparent relationship between content creators and AI model developers, ensuring a fairer digital ecosystem.

Further advancing AI accessibility, Cloudflare’s Workers AI platform brought affordable and scalable AI applications to the edge of its network, deploying AI-capable GPUs in over 180 cities worldwide. This technology not only reduces latency but also provides customers with cost-effective and immediate access to powerful AI models, supporting a responsible approach to AI innovation.

Human rights and free speech remained a priority with Project Galileo, which marked its tenth year of defending vulnerable Internet properties. In 2024, Cloudflare protected over 2,900 such properties, including those of human rights defenders, journalists, and public interest groups, from nearly 96 million daily attacks. This work underscores the company’s commitment to amplifying voices that might otherwise be silenced.

Cloudflare also reaffirmed its dedication to the open-source community through Project Alexandria. By offering free annual services and credits to open-source software projects, Cloudflare supports the foundational infrastructure of the Internet, ensuring these vital projects not only endure but also prosper. With more than $15 million in donated products and services this year, Cloudflare’s impact reaches across industries and borders, embodying its commitment to the public good.

This year’s Impact Report not only illustrates Cloudflare’s achievements but also serves as a blueprint for how technology companies can responsibly navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital world. Through its initiatives, Cloudflare continues to champion an Internet that is open, secure, and empowering for all.
